The City Council is likely to vote tomorrow on whether to eliminate funding for an important Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator position which they recently advertised for. The Sierra Club North Star Chapter strongly supports the creation of this position, and sent the below letter of support to the City Council today:
Dear City Council Members:
The Sierra Club North Star Chapter strongly supports the City of Minneapolis hiring a Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator to help make the City safer and more attractive for people walking and biking.
Such a coordinator will help the City implement its new Bicycle Master Plan and the Pedestrian Master Plan in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. The City has developed a national reputation as a leader in supporting walking and biking – a reputation that has attracted people and visitors to the City. This coordinator is critical for helping Minneapolis maintain that standing in light of the need to deliver more projects with declining funding.
The coordinator is also critical for expanding clean transportation choices that reduce our impact on the environment. Walking and biking are the cleanest forms of transportation, and cut oil dependence, global warming pollution, local air pollution, and runoff into our treasured waterways. As the price of oil goes up, it is essential that we have good and safe alternatives to driving to maintain competitive in the global economy. Our economy will be stronger if less money is shipped to pay for oil from the tar sands of Alberta or crude from the Middle East.
We urge you to support the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for safety, the environment, our economy, and the next generation in our great city. Please let me know if you have any questions.
